Wine Makers Of The Month - Tobin Wines

At Tobin Wines, they talk about growing our wine, rather than making the wine.

Their winemaking philosophy is undeniably ‘old world’ — all respect is paid to the vineyard, the vine, and the pursuit of perfection in grape quality, with little — if any — reverence paid to the winemaker or winemaking process. Each grape variety is given the spotlight to truely reveal its own unique flavour.

“No wine maker is gifted enough to make those wonderful flavours & aromas — all of the work happens out there, in the vineyard” — Adrian Tobin

The production of their wine is limited to between 100 – 160 cases of each varietal every year. The Limited Edition wines express their origins in the rugged and majestic landscape of the Granite Belt making them truly unique.

A Taste of the Granite Belt

Tobin Wines have great belief in the French concept of 'terroir'. This — as the French say — is a 'sense of place where the grapes grow'. That sense of place is the micro-climate of the vineyard, or even within a patch of grapes.

Temperature, humidity, sunlight, wind, rainfall, aspect, and soil type — its this combination of factors that is responsible for the wonderful flavour characteristics inherent in a particular patch of grapes. Within a single vineyard, these characters change from year to year, depending on the seasons.

“No other wine growing region in Australia has what we have in terms of geography, topography, altitude and climate… It’s this combination which produces wine of such high character and quality”  — Adrian Tobin

They have taken the utmost care in selecting a site for our vineyard, with a north facing slope and granitic free draining soils in Ballandean — the heart of the Granite Belt. For the best part of the past decade they have been devoted to guiding their vines to maturity and ensuring the production of truely premium fruit quality.
